The name of the town was first recorded in a Carolingian exchange document in the year 832 A.D. Where the magnificent Renaissance castle now stands on the romantic Elbbach there was in the 13th century, run by Cistercian monks of the Rheingau monastery Eberbach, a model farm which Count Emich of Nassau-Hadamar bought in 1320, transforming it into a moated castle. In 1324 he obtained municipal rights to his residence. After a catastrophic fire in the 16th century there were considerable changes brought about to the appearance of the town in the following century.

The restoration of the town is due to Count, later Prince Johann Ludwig (1590-1653) who built the wonderful Renaissance castle as his residence, and provided the Baroque new town with large market-places and public fountains.
