Oberweyer is a very old settlement. Probably no village can prove the exact date of its foundation. Our village was very likely founded in the time before 500 A.D. Its sheltered position and the fertile, level land on the edge of the Limburg Basin provided a natural basis for the settlement. It is,in fact, mentioned by name in a donation deed from 772 in the Lorsch Codex. Rachilde,of the Rupperts, daughter of Count Kankor, gave to Lorsch Abbey her property in different villages of the Lahngau, including that in "Wilere", on 12th August of the 4th year of Charlemagne's reign. From the other villages named in the document it is quite clear that our Oberweyer is meant. A document of November, 1259, mentions a further large donation. On the day he became a Cistercian monk Heinrich Coppin from Oberweyer gave his entire fortune to Eberbach Abbey. There were in Oberweyer in 1506 16 farms belonging to the nobility, foundations and abbeys. Surely there were many others owned privately. From this it is apparent that Oberweyer, even at that time, was a sizeable Community. www.Oberweyer.de
